Overview

Evolution

Under the influence of globalization, issues such as labor shortages and the competition for talent have shifted the leadership styles of modern organization. Business operations have transitioned from being efficiency- and growth-oriented to a people-oriented model, where companies must balance environmental and social sustainability. According to the "2021 White Paper on Small and Medium Enterprises in Taiwan," 80% of Taiwan's workforce is employed by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), highlighting their critical role as the driving force of Taiwan's economy. However, the limited resources and development opportunities of SMEs often constrain employee working conditions and growth, and there is a lack of a comprehensive database for research on SMEs in Taiwan. Most SMEs start as startups, often family-owned, which raises key questions: How can entrepreneurial opportunities be identified? How can entrepreneurial spirit be passed on? After starting a business, how should management strategies be developed? How can human capital be nurtured? These concerns are closely tied to the development of core talents, such as SME owners.

Missions

The purpose of this center is to conduct research on the business strategies and talent development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Taiwan. The aim is to integrate public and private sector databases to create the "Industry and Corporate Talent Database," focusing on specific industries. The research subjects will cover startups and family businesses, with topics including entrepreneurial spirit, governance and management of family businesses, the cultivation of key talents, human capital in enterprises, and environmental social governance (ESG). We aim at three main topics: Entrepreneurial Strategy, Talent Management in Family Businesses and Human Capital within Organizations. A brief overview is as follows:

  1. Innovation and Entrepreneurship Strategy: This topic explores the relationship between the sources of entrepreneurial capital, strategic behaviors, and entrepreneurial outcomes (survival and growth) in the process from innovation to entrepreneurship. To support this research, we will build an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talent Database and a platform for matching novice entrepreneurs with talent, systematically collecting data for both research and practical use. (Topic Leader: Prof. Paolien Chen)

  2. Family Governance, Environmental Social Governance (ESG), and Organizational Performance: Using the collected industry and talent data, this research will investigate the relationship between corporate governance mechanisms, executive decision-making behaviors, and ESG response strategies and operational performance in family businesses. (Topic Leader: Prof. Shyh Jer Chen)

  3. Strategic Human Resource and Stars Management: Focusing on strategic human resource management, this topic examines how companies' strategies in recruitment, training, compensation, and human resource data analytics can help retain talent and create a competitive advantage. Additionally, it will explore how companies can motivate and retain stars, ensuring that they are willing to assist other colleagues, thereby enhancing team performance. (Topic Leader: Prof. Nai-Wen Chi)

Goals

The establishment of Center for Strategy and Human Capital Research aims to contribute to the development of industries and talent in Taiwan. The professors responsible for the three main topics have not only received Outstanding Research Awards but have also recruited scholars who have won prestigious recognitions, including the Outstanding Research Award and the Ta-You Wu Award, to participate in. The center's project goals are divided into short-term, mid-term, and long-term objectives, which are outlined as follows:

Short-Term

Initially, the center's members will focus on research related to startups and family businesses in specific industries. The research topics include the entrepreneurial motivations and success factors of business owners, governance and management of family businesses, the cultivation of star talent, human capital in enterprises, and environmental social governance (ESG). Furthermore, we will establish the "Industry and Corporate Talent Database" platform, which will track the development trajectories of businesses and innovative entrepreneurial talent. The data on this platform will provide our team with resources for academic research and paper publications, as well as promote industry and talent development. The platform's data will also be available for use by both the academic and industry professionals.

Mid-Term

Building upon the established "Industry and Corporate Talent Database," the center will further develop channels for industry-academia collaboration, offering services such as corporate diagnostics and key talent management to enhance companies' innovation, entrepreneurship, and operational capabilities. Additionally, the center will collaborate with businesses to organize courses, sharing academic insights on entrepreneurship, family governance, and human resource management, aiming to bridge the gap between industry and academic research.

Long-Term

Internationalization is the ultimate goal of this center. We aim to collaborate with other internationally renowned research centers, facilitating scholar exchanges, sharing industry-academia cooperation experiences, and co-authoring and publishing research papers. This will allow our center to connect with international networks, enhance our global visibility, and become a internationally renowned center, Center for strategy and Human Capital Research.
